Pearl (PRL) is a proof-of-work blockchain launched in April, 2026 by Pearl Research Labs. Pearl’s blockchain is forked from Bitcoin’s open source code, but it replaces conventional hash mining with a system called Proof of Useful Work (PoUW). Instead of repeatedly calculating SHA-256 hashes like Bitcoin miners, Pearl miners perform matrix multiplication (cuPOW). The official website is pearlresearch.ai
Pearl’s computational verification allows Nvidia GPUs to mine blocks while simultaneously executing the same underlying math required for AI inference and training models.
Pearl argues that a GPU should be able to:
- Perform an actual AI operation.
- Extract a cryptographic mining proof from that operation.
- Help secure the Pearl blockchain.
- Earn PRL.
The blockchain proof supposedly adds very little additional computational cost to the original matrix multiplication. Pearl calls this the “two-for-one” model: conduct AI work and mine cryptocurrency with the same GPU operation.
Pearl gained credibility when AI infrastructure company Together AI announced an exclusive partnership on May 15, 2026.
Together AI introduced a Pearl-powered inference endpoint using an instruction-tuned Gemma model. It said the endpoint would cost over 25% less, with the discount supported by the anticipated value of PRL generated alongside inference.
This is a real commercial partnership, not just an anonymous project claiming to have an AI connection.
However, it does not demonstrate that the wider Pearl mining network is doing useful AI work.
An independent research preprint published in June, 2026 found a fundamental difference between what Pearl allows and what it enforces.
Pearl can extract a valid mining proof from real AI inference. But the protocol verifies only that a matrix multiplication was performed correctly. It does not establish that:
- The matrices came from a genuine AI model.
- Someone requested the inference.
- The result was delivered to a customer.
- The computation produced anything economically useful.
Consequently, miners can generate arbitrary matrices, multiply them and receive valid mining rewards without running an AI model.
The researchers examined 8,012 mining workers and reported that the dominant mining software appeared to contain no AI-inference code. They also created an independent miner that submitted random matrix work and received valid pool shares.
Their useful distinction is:
- Enforced usefulness: the protocol requires proof that the work served an outside purpose.
- Enabled usefulness: real work can produce mining proofs, but ordinary miners can perform meaningless work instead.
- No usefulness claim: traditional proof of work, such as Bitcoin.
Pearl currently appears to fit the enabled usefulness category. The study is a preprint still under review, and some of its conclusions rely on observation and software analysis rather than complete visibility into every miner. Nevertheless, its central technical criticism is compelling and consistent with Pearl’s documented design.

- Market capitalization: $66 million
- Fully diluted valuation: $546 million

Trading is concentrated on SafeTrade, BigONE and CoinEx. Reported order-book depth is limited, and most volume comes from SafeTrade, so the displayed market capitalization should not be mistaken for the amount of money that could actually be withdrawn from the market.
Pearl is not an ordinary AI-themed token. It has:
- A functioning independent blockchain
- An unusual consensus mechanism
- Public source code
- Research behind its construction
- A recognizable AI-industry partner
- An active mining network
- No reported premine or founder allocation
But the project’s language risks overstating what the network currently accomplishes. Pearl has apparently demonstrated that AI computation can generate blockchain proofs. It has not demonstrated that its general mining activity consists of useful AI computation.
Pearl is a proof-of-work blockchain that replaces hashing with AI-compatible matrix multiplication. Real AI workloads can mine it, but the protocol does not currently require miners’ computations to serve any real AI workload.
